Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Statesmen soccer team fell to West Florida Sunday, after the Argos scored three unanswerd goals to defeat the Statesmen 4-2.
Steven Simmons got things rolling for the Statesmen (5-3, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) early on in the conference matchup against West Florida, scoring on a free kick from approximately 40 yards out to give Delta State the early lead.
After the Argos tied things at one, Caue Da Silva put the Statesmen back in the lead with his ninth goal of the season, scoring on a quick pass from
Daniel Deblaere in the 28th minute.
The Statesmen were unable to maintain from that point as the Argos urgency allowed for a late goal in the first half to tie things up heading into the break.
In the second half, the Statesmen were again outshot by West Florida and Frank Cope scored twice to put the Argos up 4-2 and secure the victory.
West Florida outshot the Statesmen 38-7 in the match and put 14 shots on net to the Statesmen's five.
The Statesmen had 11 fouls in the match to West Florida's 12, but Delta State did pick up two yellow cards, one to Simmons and one to
Stetson Chamberlain.
Delta State will return home to Delta Field for it's next two matches. The Statesmen will host Union University Friday afternoon, with a scheduled kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
