Statesmen Soccer weathers the Storm to defeat SNU 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Delta State soccer team picked up its first win of the 2012 season after defending a late push from Southern Nazarene to defeat the Crimson Storm 3-2 Monday afternoon.

For the second game in the row, the Statesmen(1-1-0) found themselves in a scoreless battle into the second half of play. Freshman forward Jaxon Lambert scored his first goal as a Statesmen when he followed up his initial shot and put away a rebound from SNU (0-3-0) keeper Blake Anderson in the 73rd minute to give Delta State a 1-0 lead.

Lambert doubled his goal mark when he scored seven minutes later from eight yards out to give the Statesme a 2-0 lead.

Lamert wasn't finished and the Statesmen didn't relax. Less than a minute later, Lambert put a cross into the box and Stetson Chamberlain headed it home from five yards out to give the Statesmen a 3-0 lead.

Southern Nazarene came back and made it a game, putting up a flurry of shots in the final few minutes. Hajime Chumpitaz and Daniel Hernandez each scored in the 83rd and 87th minute to bring the score back to 3-2.

The Statesmen held on in the final few minutes and secured the first win of the season.

Delta State outshot Southern Nazarene 6-3 in the first half, but were only able to get two of those shots on net. The Crimson Storm had the only corner kick of the first half, but the Statesmen applied the pressure in the second half with eight more shots and six corner kicks.

The Statesmen did pick up 14 fouls in the game and Caue Da Silva and Austin Jackman each picked up yellow cards in the match. Southern Nazarene had 22 fouls and one yellow card in the match.

Next up for the Statesmen will be a trip to Millsaps College to play the Majors on Friday, Sept. 7. The game will be at 6 p.m. at Harper Davis Field.
