CLEVELAND - The Delta State University men's soccer team defeated Millsaps College Friday night 4-1. Four different Statesmen scored in the victory and
Milos Boskovic had five saves in the win.
Three Statesmen scored their first goals of the 2012 season in the win.
Daniel Deblaere got things rolling for the Statesmen (2-1-0) in the first half, scoring in the 20th minute to put the Statesmen in the lead. The goal was Deblaere's first of the season.
Millsaps (0-2-1) answered with a counter attack of its own as Hayden Baker scored for the Majors in the 42nd minute to send the game into half at a 1-1 tie.
The Statesmen made a few adjustments at the half and it paid off in the 71st minute when
Jaxon Lambert scored his team leading third goal of the season off of a ball from
Sebastian Ridout to put the Statesmen up for good.
Just minutes later, it was Lambert's turn to feed the scorer as he set up
Reese Shaffer, who scored his first goal of the season in the 75th minute.
"We made some improvements in the second half and the boys really settled into the game," said head coach Matt Watts. "I thought they handled the crowd really well and played good against a very good Millsaps side."
Five minutes late, Ridout added an insurance marker, scoring his first of the season on a ball from
Kofi Adu-Amankwah, putting the Statesmen up 4-1.
Boskovic, who improves to 2-1 on the season in net, made four of his five saves in the second half to preserve the Statesmen lead.
The Statesmen out shot the Majors 14-12 in the game and had seven shots on goal to Millsaps' six. The Statesmen had eight corners on the night and gave up four corners to the Majors.
The Statesmen had 14 fouls in the game to Millsaps' 12 fouls, but did not receive a card. Two Majors received yellow cards in the match.
"It was a good win for us tonight," said Watts. "Its always tough when you are traveling on the road but the boys played well and are making progress."
The Statesmen will travel back down to the Jackson area Sunday when they take on Mississippi College at Robert P. Longabaugh Field for a 3 p.m. start. The Choctaws are 1-2-0 on the season.
