Stiff defense gives Lady Statesmen big victory over West Alabama

Seneca Walton had 15 points and a career high 23 rebounds for DSU
Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball team held the West Alabama Tigers to only 32 points in a 58-32 win, Thursday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
 
The 32 points allowed were the lost total given up by a DSU team since a 67-31 win over the University of West Georgia on December 4, 2010.
 
DSU (9-5, 4-2) never trailed in the contest, and used a 16-2 run over an eight-minute span in the first half to take control of the game.
 
The Tigers (9-5, 3-3) were held to only 11 first half points by a stiff Lady Statesmen defense that only allowed four first half field goals. UWA finished the half 4-of-28 (14.3), while DSU finished the first 20 minutes 12-of-33 (36.4) from the floor. Seneca Walton had a double- double in the first half, as she had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Nikkia Jordan had six for the Tigers.
 
UWA started the second half on a 7-2 run, but did not get any closer than 16 points for the remainder of the contest.
 
Each team struggled from the floor in the second half, as DSU finished only 8-of-22 (36.4), while the Tigers were 8-of-31 (25.8)
 
Seneca Walton finished with 15 points to go along with a career best 23 rebounds. Chelsey Rhodes finished with 14 for DSU.
 
Nikkia Jordan (14) was the only player to score in double figures for the Tigers.
 
The Lady Statesmen return to Walter Sillers Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 19 to face the University of West Georgia Wolves. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
