Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball team held on for a 65-54 victory over the visiting West Georgia Wolves, Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
DSU (10-5, 5-2) led by as many as 23 points in each half, before the Wolves (10-5, 4-3) went on a 19-6 run over a 12:47 span to cut the lead to 51-45 on a layup by Shakiyla McLin with 3:55 left in the contest.
The Lady Statesmen, who are now tied for first place in the Gulf South Conference standings, responded with a 7-2 run to regain control down the stretch, to help close out the game.
A pair of free throws by
Brooke Rhodes with 1:12 remaining in the half extended a DSU run to 19-4, before McLin hit a tough shot off the backboard at the buzzer to give the Lady Statesmen a 36-17 lead at halftime.
DSU held the Wolves to only 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from the floor in the first half. The Lady Statesmen had a hot start from the floor in the first half, finishing 16-of-30 (53.3). McLin lead UWG with six first half points, while
Rhandi Ball had 10 for DSU.
UWG was able to get back into the contest when the Lady Statesmen were only 1-of-8 from the floor over a 6:34 span.
The Lady Statesmen were held to 9-of-33 (27.3) in the second half, while UWG was 12-of-31 (38.7) from the floor.
Brooke Rhodes had 14 to lead DSU.
Rhandi Ball (12) and
Chelsey Rhodes (11) also scored in double figures for the Green-and-White. DSU outrebounded the Wolves by a big 52-37 margin.
Mone Peoples of UWG led all scorers with 18 points.
DSU will hit the road Thursday, Jan. 24 to take on the West Florida Argonauts. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. from Pensacola, Fla.
