Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University men's basketball team held the University of West Florida 22 points below their season scoring average en route to a 60-54 victory inside the UWF Field House on Thursday, January 24.
The Statesmen's (7-9, 3-5 GSC) stifling defense limited the Argonauts (8-8, 3-5 GSC) to just 19 of 52 (.365) shooting from the field and 16 points in the paint on the night.
The contest remained close until
Cornel Knight connected on a jumper at the 2:37 mark of the first half to give DSU a 25-15 advantage. UWF closed the gap to 34-31 on a Peter Connole bucket in the second half but that would be as close as the Argos would get to the Statesmen for the rest of the night.
Mike Weems led the way for the Green-and-White posting 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the floor and 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Freshman guard
Jack Madgen contributed 11 points while Zelvin Smith snagged a career-high six rebounds.
Ellis Young and Terrence Beasley paced the Argos offensively with 20 and 16 points respectively.
Delta State returns to action on Saturday, January 26 to face Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga. at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The game will be televised on CBS-SN and broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network.
