Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Deandre Hersey scored a game-high 26 points to lead the University of North Alabama to a 69-53 victory over Delta State University Saturday, Jan. 5 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Lions (10-2, 3-1 GSC) raced out to a 16-point lead and never looked back in the win over the Statesmen (4-7, 0-3 GSC).
The offensive end of the floor was a struggle for the Statesmen all night, as DSU managed just 33 percent from the floor on 17-of-51 shooting, while the Lions shot a blistering 50 percent on 25-of-50 attempts. UNA also connected on seven 3-pointers in the victory. DSU out-rebounded UNA 42-28, but UNA led in points-off-turnovers 14-8 and points in the paint 22-16.
Both teams placed two players in double digits. Marquel Darrington added 11 points for UNA, while Wes Long added nine points with Rshaun Claibourne and Bruce Adams posted eight points each.
Jack Magden led the Statesmen with 13 points and
Matt Allbritton dropped in 11 points off the bench. Terry Leake, Jr. finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Ryan Smith also contributed with nine rebounds.
UNA led 28-17 at the half after holding the Statesmen to just 17.4 percent. The Lions shot 35.7 percent.
The Statesmen will be back on the court next Thursday, Jan. 10 at Shorter University in another Gulf South Conference clash. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST in Rome, Ga. The game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network with J.T. Webb and Herb Brooks on the call.
