Lions complete monumental comeback to shock Lady Statesmen

Chelsey Rhodes had 14 points to lead DSU
Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Jennifer Towne banked in a three-point shot with two seconds left to complete a monumental comeback, as the North Alabama Lions defeated the Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball team 59-58, Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
 
The Lions (11-3, 4-0) outscored the Lady Statesmen (7-4, 2-1) 42-20 in the second half to pick up its first win over Delta State inside Sillers Coliseum since the 1990-91 season.
 
DSU closed out the final 12:30 of the first half with a 26-9 run, holding the Lions to only 8-of-23 (34.8) from the floor. With the help of 5-of-11 (45.5) from three-point range, the Lady Statesmen finished 15-of-24 (62.5) from the floor.
 
Rhandi Ball led all scorers with 11 points in the first half. Sarah Bailey had six to pace UNA.
 
The Lions picked up the intensity on both ends of the floor in the second half, going on a 9-2 run to get back in the contest, holding the Lady Statesmen to one field goal from 12:15 until 6:25 was left in the contest.
 
From that point, UNA finished the contest with a 23-9 run to finish the scoring, including a 14-6 spurt in the final 2:15. The Lady Statesmen took a 58-51 lead with 35 seconds remaining on a pair of Brooke Rhodes free throws.
 
The Lions then got a layup from Nichelle Fillmore, with 18 seconds left, followed by a three-pointer by Abby Andrews with 10 seconds left to make the score 58-56, before Towne's desperation three-pointer banked in to end the game.
 
Chelsey Rhodes led the way with 14 points for the Lady Statesmen. Seneca Walton (12), Brooke Rhodes (10) and Ball (12) each finished with double figures for DSU. Sarah Bailey finished with 11 for the Lions, who shot 16-of-31 (51.6) in the second half. The Lady Statesmen finished the final 20 minutes 7-of-23 (30.4) from the floor.
 
DSU will look to rebound on Thursday, Jan. 10 for a GSC matchup with the Shorter University Hawks. The contest marks the first meeting between the Lady Statesmen and the Hawks. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. CST.
