LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Delta State University men's soccer team traveled to Livingston, Ala., to take on the Tigers of West Alabama on Friday night. The Statesmen fell to the Tigers 3-1 to drop to 1-12-1 on the season and 1-9-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Alabama improves to 10-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play.
The Tigers opened up the scoring at the 19:06 mark to give West Alabama a 1-0 advantage over the Statesmen. Less than eight minutes later, the Tigers scored again to extend their lead over Delta State to 2-0. The score held going into the half.
The Green-and-White responded with a goal of their own in the 57
th minute to close the gap 2-1.
Sebastian Knabke scored his first goal of the season and the first goal for Delta State on a pass from
Amine Rahmani. A late Tiger goal with less than four minutes to play put West Alabama up 3-1, which was enough to seal the deal.
Delta State outshot West Alabama in shots (15-10) and shots on goal (9-8), but it was not enough to get the win. Nine different Statesmen contributed shots.
Jack Pilley and
Amine Rahmani led the Green-and-White with three shots each and five combined shots on goal.
Fraser Pain and
Jaxon Lambert added two shots each, while
Luke Mason,
Paul Ochnicki, Knabke,
Russell Alvarez, Jr., and
Joe Stockglausner supplied one shot apiece.
Mack Pytyck was in goal for Delta State as he played all 90 minutes, allowing three goals and grabbing five saves.
The Statesmen will hit the pitch again in Pensacola, Fla., to face the Argos of West Florida on Sunday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
