Statesmen Soccer Wins in Overtime Thriller

Box Score
CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's soccer team defeated the Bucs of Christian Brothers University in overtime fashion on Wednesday afternoon. The Statesmen won 1-0 in overtime to improve to 2-13-1 on the season and 2-10-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Christian Brothers falls to 7-9-1 overall and 5-8-1 in conference play.

Offense on both sides of the ball struggled to execute, as neither team was able to find the back of the net through the first and second halves of regulation. The score read 0-0 at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.

Sophomore Jaxon Lambert was the hero for the Green-and-White as he scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Russell Alvarez, Jr. at the 93:36 mark, giving the Statesmen the 1-0 advantage over the Bucs and the win. This was Delta State's second win of the season. Both games were won in overtime with the first coming earlier this season when the Statesmen beat Union University 2-1 in double overtime.

Head coach Nick Glaser was thrilled for his squad. "I really want to give all the credit to my players. We are banged up with injuries. It's been a tough season, but they don't quit. I am proud of them for that. It was a great win tonight."

Although Christian Brothers outshot Delta State 16-13, the Statesmen took the 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Fraser Pain led the Green-and-White with three shots, two on goal. Leonardo Rodrigues, Jaxon Lambert, and Jonathan Schmaltz each recorded two shots with one on goal. Amine Rahmani, Austin Jackman, and Luke Mason each had one shot with Abraheem Saleh recording one shots, one on goal.

Delta State will hit the pitch again on Sunday, Nov. 3 in Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Ouachita Baptist. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
