Statesmen Drop Match Against Bucs 3-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State University men's soccer squad made their way to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Bucs of Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference action on Friday night. The Statesmen fell to the Bucs 3-1 to drop to 0-7-1 on the season and 0-5-1 in conference play, while Christian Brothers improved to 4-5-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play.

Delta State scored first at the 3:37 mark. Paul Ochnicki found Bryce Childers who scored the first goal of the game to put Delta State in front of Christian Brothers 1-0. The Bucs answered ten minutes later with an equalizer to tally the score at 1-1. The half time score stood at one all.

Both teams were aggressive on offense coming out for the second half but could not execute. Two Bucs goals in the last five minutes of play gave Christian Brothers the 3-1 advantage over Delta State. A goal at the 85 and 87-minute mark was enough for the Bucs to claim the win over the Statesmen by a final score of 3-1.

Delta State was led by Bryce Childers with one goal on two shots and one shot on goal to give the Statesmen their only goal of the match. Luke Mason and Fraser Pain added one shot each to Delta State's four total shots. Christian Brothers outshot Delta State 23-4, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.

Mack Pytyck returned to the net for Delta State and played all 90 minutes. He recorded five saves and allowed three goals.

Up next for Statesman soccer is a conference road series with the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Union University. The Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Ala., on Oct. 11 to hit the pitch for a rematch against the Chargers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
