Lady Statesmen Rebound With 83-41 Victory Over Bulldogs

Cleveland, Miss. – Sophomore Becca Ruckes' career-high 24 points led the Delta State University women's basketball team to a 83-41 victory over Selma University on Tuesday, Nov. 12, inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Ruckes finished the night 10-of-11 from the floor and five rebounds in just 21 minutes of play.
 
DSU (2-1) streaked out to a 10-0 lead over the Bulldogs (2-2) with junior Rhandi Ball and freshman Anissa Jackson to lead the way.
 
SU put its first points on the board with a Jasmine Fraizer layup at the 15:03 mark to cut the Lady Statesmen lead down to 10-2.
 
Delta State ended the remainder of the half on an 18-10 run to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.
 
Junior Seneca Walton and Ruckes both picked up where they left off this past weekend. A Ripley, Miss. native, Ruckes posted 12 points in 12 minutes of action; Walton notched a double-double effort in the first half with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Ball tallied 4-of-5 from the field for eight points.
 
The Lady Statesmen shot 17-of-31 (.548) from the floor compared to the Bulldogs 8-of-31 (.258) effort.
 
DSU continued to pound the paint in the second half outscoring SU 26-4 in the lane; the Green-and-White finished with a 48-12 scoring advantage in the paint for the game.
 
The Bulldogs did take advantage of 18 DSU turnovers and converted them in 13 points to close the scoring gap at times.
 
Freshman Alexis Ross picked up her first points of her career as a Lady Statesmen with 5-of-9 shooting from the floor for 10 points; while Jackson recorded a career-high 10 points and four steals. Walton finished the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ball accounted for 14 points and five rebounds.
 
Christy Shelby led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 points and three rebounds with the rest of the team finishing the night for 13-of-55 (.236) from the floor.
 
Delta State returns to action on Nov. 23, traveling to face Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
