Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In a game where they never trailed, the Delta State University men's basketball team won 62-60 over Henderson State University on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Duke Wells Center. DSU led the contest for 34:33 and only allowed HSU to tie the score five times.
Delta State (5-1) picked up its largest lead of the contest, 56-43, on a pair of
Jack Madgen free throws with 4:08 remaining. Henderson State (4-3) rallied on a 17-6 run to close the gap to 62-60 but fell short on Taylor Smith's last heave of the game.
The Statesmen and the Reddies both struggled offensively, 5-of-16 (.313) and 2-of-13 (.154) respectively, in the early goings of the game. That is until junior
Alister Chisholm knocked down a 3-point shot to give DSU a 9-6 advantage at the 12:47 mark.
Chisholm's 3-pointer sparked an 11-2 run that extended down to 6:43 left in the first half of play, DSU led 17-8 after Madgen connected on a shot from behind the arc.
Henderson State did not back down in the late stages of the first half, Smith led a 9-0 run and tied the game 17-17 on a tip-in from a missed free-throw by Aaron Harwell.
DSU closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 26-21 advantage into the locker room. Chisholm tallied eight points and three rebounds to lead the Statesmen at the half, Madgen contributed seven points and two assists.
Delta State ended the first half 9-of-27 (.333) from the floor, compared to Henderson State's 8-of-27 (.296).
Senior
Willie Readus came alive for the Statesmen in the second half on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe for 15 second-half points, 19 total on the night; Readus also snagged seven rebounds.
Madgen finished with 17 points, while Chishom finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Freshmen
Devin Schmidt brought in seven rebounds and five points.
DSU finished the contest 21-of-56 (.375) from the floor, while HSU knocked in 23-of-59 (.390).
Delta State returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 30, to take on Cumberland University (Tenn.) inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Tip is slated for 4:00 p.m.
