CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Statesmen soccer team of Delta State University wrapped up their season on Wednesday afternoon with a Gulf South Conference makeup game against Union University. Delta State dropped to the Bulldogs by a score of 4-2 to fall 3-14-1 overall and 2-11-1 in conference play, while Union improved to 4-12-1 on the season and 2-11-1 in conference play.

The Bulldogs took the early 1-0 lead with a goal just under eight minutes into the game. Another Union goal in the 29th minute of play gave Delta State a 2-0 disadvantage. The Statesmen were scoreless in the first half as the score held at 2-0 in favor of Union.

Paul Ochnicki put the Green-and-White back in the game as he found the back of the net at the 55:36 mark to cut the Union lead to 2-1. The Bulldogs quickly responded two minutes later with another goal to regain a commanding 3-1 lead. Union added to their lead once again in the 73rd minute of play to make the score 4-1. A header by Delta State's Jack Pilley and assist by Amine Rahmani lessened the Union lead by one to cut the Bulldog's advantage to 4-2 with just under 10 minutes to play. The late goal by Delta State was not enough to gain momentum over Union as they fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 4-2.

Union's Alex Pratt stood out for the Bulldog's offense as he recorded a hat trick with three goals, five shots, and four shots on goal.

Union took the slight advantage over Delta State in shots 16-15 and shots on goal 10-6. Several Statesmen made an impact on Delta State's offense. Jack Pilley took two shots, two on goal, and recorded one of the only Statesman goals, while Paul Ochnicki recorded the other goal. Amine Rahamani was responsible for three shots and one assist. Abraheem Saleh and Luke Mason combined for three shots, while Chase Chasteen and Jonathan Schmaltz each took one shot, each on goal.

Milos Boskovic was in goal for the Statemen as he allowed all four goals and grabbed six saves.

Delta State closes out the season with a final 3-14-1 overall record and 2-11-1 conference record. The Green-and-White finished fifth in the Gulf South Conference, narrowly missing a conference tournament berth as only the top four teams in the conference were allowed to move on to postseason play.
