Ball, Walton, Rhodes and Hickman lead Lady Statesmen as Delta State soars past Shorter 65-44

CLEVELAND, Miss. Rhandi Ball narrowly missed a triple-double to lead the Delta State University Women's basketball team past Shorter University Thursday, Feb. 14 at Walter Sillers Coliseum.   The sophomore from Pontotoc, Miss., scored 10 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds in DSU's 65-44 victory over SU.  The Lady Statesmen improved to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in Gulf South Conference play while the Lady Hawks slid to 13-9 overall and 8-6 in league action. 

The Lady Statesmen used a 25-13 run over the final 9:33 to put the game away.  DSU shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game hitting 42.9 percent (24-of-56), while holding SU to a mere 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the field.  DSU also outrebounded SU 47-30 and outscored the Lady Hawks 22-12 off the bench.  

The Lady Statesmen also recorded a season-high 11 blocks in the win. 

The Lady Statesmen took a 31-24 lead in thanks in part to Ball's double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Chelsey Rhodes half-high 14 points.  DSU shot just 37.5 percent in the opening half on 12-of-32 attempts, while SU connected on 35.5 percent on 11-of-31 attempts.

Lindsey Crawford led the Lady Hawks with six points and four rebounds.  

Joining Ball in double figures for the Lady Statesmen were Chelsey Rhodes, Seneca Walton and Chadisty Hickman.  Rhodes finished with 16 points with Walton turning in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Hickman scored a career-high 13 points off the bench and Shanae Govan tied her career-high with six assists.

Karisma Boykin led Shorter with 12 points.  Shelby Farrer led the Lady Hawks with eight rebounds. 

The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 versus the University of Alabama-Huntsville.  The game will mark the 11th annual Sillers Coliseum Pink Out with fans wearing a predominance of green getting free admission.
