Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Jamie Smith's driving lay-up with 10.2 seconds remaining in the game lifted the No. 7 University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (19-4, 12-3 GSC) to a 73-71 victory over the Delta State University Statesmen (9-13, 5-9 GSC) Saturday, Feb. 16 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The loss evens the season series for the two teams at 1-1 and keeps the Chargers in first place in the Gulf South Conference while the Statesmen stay in sixth with two weeks to go in the regular season.
After Smith put the Chargers up 73-71 with 10.2 seconds to go, DSU's
Cornel Knight's 17-foot jumper rattled around the rim before falling to the court for the UAH win. Smith's layup completed a furious second half comeback for UAH, who trailed by nine, 59-50, with 8:38 to play. The game also featured 11 ties and seven lead changes.
Both teams shot the ball well for the game, as DSU hit on 52.8 percent (28-of-53) and UAH connected on 23-of-46 from the floor for 50.0 percent. The major difference came at the free throw line where UAH nailed 19-of-23 attempts. DSU was just 8-of-12 at the stripe.
Smith, a senior All-American guard, scored a game-high 33 points including 13-of-13 at the free throw line to lead the Chargers. Zane Campbell added 20 points and Wayne Dedrick dropped in 13.
The Statesmen placed four players in double figures, led by Knight's 17 points and nine rebounds. The junior from Mobile, Ala., also dished out a game-high six assists.
Terry Leake, Jr., scored 16 points and grabbed six boards with Mike Weems adding 15 points and
Jack Madgen 13 points.
In one of the better played halves of the season, the Statesmen took a 33-32 lead over the No. 7 Chargers into the locker room after shooting 50 percent in the first half. DSU connected on 13-of-26 shots from the floor, while holding UAH to 45.5 percent on 10-of-22 from the field.
The Statesmen built a six-point lead with 3:54 to play, but the Chargers closed out the half on an 8-3 run to cut it to one at the half.
Weems led the Statesmen with 10 points at the break with Leake, Jr., adding nine points. Smith led all scorers and the Chargers with 17 points in the first.
The Statesmen travel to long-time rival West Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 21 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Pruitt Hall in Livingston, Ala.
