Lady Statesmen can't get clutch hits in two losses at UNA Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team recorded only two hits in game one and left 11 runners on base in game two, falling 7-0 to No. 7 Indianapolis and 6-3 to Drury on day one of the UNA Inviational.

DSU (4-4) fell behind the Greyhounds (6-1) 1-0 in the top of the third inning, as Bailey Wittenauer had a two out RBI single, scoring Jennifer DeMotte.

The best chance for the Lady Statesmen came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Taylor Hughes led off the inning with a double to right-center and was advanced to third bace on a groundout by Kaitlin Moore. Hounds starting pitcher DeMotte then proved why she was an All-American last season, as she forced a ground out and a foul out, with runners on second and third to end the inning.

With a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth, UINDY broke through with five runs in the frame, taking advantage of three hits, two walks and two wild pitches.

Kassidy Tally had the other base hit for DSU, a bunt single in the third inning.

Erica Goodwin, Casey Williamson and Wittenauer each had two hits for the Hounds.

Brittany Gonzales (2-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Miller Maddox did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of relief.

DeMotte (3-0) struck out five and walked three.

In game two, Drury (5-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, scoring runs on a wild pitch and a  sacrifice fly.

DSU scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the third inning, as Taylor Holland's walk with the bases loaded scored Tally.

The Panthers regained command in the top of the fourth taking a 4-1 lead, as Regina Norris drove in the first of her three runs with a two RBI double.

Taylor Hughes drove in a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, with a base hit up the middle, to make the score 4-3. 

Drury responded again with two more runs in the top half of the inning with a bases loaded walk and another RBI hit by Norris.

The Lady Statesmen threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but pinch hitter Amber Mitcham was struck out by relief pitcher Monica Villarreal to end the game.

Kelsey James, Kaitlyn Bowles and Norris each had three hits for the Panthers. Tally and Hughes each had two hits for the Green-and-White.

Lauren Kendall (2-2) allowed six runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the loss. Caitlin Krebs (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits, while Villarreal worked 3.1 innings, and allowed four hits, as she picked up the save.

DSU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 for a pair of games, starting with Missouri-St. Louis at 11 a.m. followed by Miles College at 1 p.m.
