Lady Statesmen face 52-42 setback at the hands of North Alabama

Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State women's basketball team fell 52-42 to the University of North Alabama inside Flowers Hall on Saturday, Feb. 9. The 42 points was the lowest point total since the 50-42 defeat at the hands Valdosta State University on Jan. 05, 2012.

The Lady Statesmen (13-7, 8-4 GSC) and the Lion's (16-7, 9-4 GSC) offense seemed diluted in the first-half; neither team reached the double-digit mark until the 9:15 mark but UNA worked out the kinks coming out of the locker room to convert on 12-of-23 (.522) shooting from the floor.

Delta State gained separation late in the first-half on buckets from Chadisty Hickman and Chelsey Rhodes to extend the lead out to five at 22-17 with 1:00 to play. North Alabama responded with four straight free-throws from Nichelle Fillmore and Sarah Bailey to close out the half.

DSU offensively in the first-half of play connected 10-of-30 (.333) shooting from the floor, but retained a 22-21 lead over the Lions heading into the locker room. UNA shot 7-of-18 (.389) from the floor and neither team connected on a three-point attempt in the half.

Rhandi Ball scored four points in the opening minute of the second-half to put the Lady Statesmen ahead 26-23, but managed only two points during a nine minute stretch afterwards. The Lions mustered a 12-2 run during that time to go up 35-28 with 11:32 left into the contest.

Delta State roared back behind Seneca Walton's six straight points to cut the North Alabama lead down to 41-39 with 4:44 remaining but the UNA offense responded once more with an 11-3 run to put the game out of reach and close out the contest.

The Lions converted on 14-of-26 from the charity stripe while DSU went 7-of-9.

The Lady Statesmen return to action on Thursday, Feb. 14, against Shorter University inside Walter-Sillers Coliseum. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network.
