Lady Statesmen bats big in sweep of CBU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team had 23 total hits, including 15 in game one, to sweep a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers, Saturday at University Field.
 
The Lady Statesmen held off CBU 8-7 in game one, and used three home runs in a 9-0 win in game two.
 
DSU (9-11, 4-4) ended a four game Gulf South Conference losing streak with a victory in the first game, while CBU (4-8, 2-6) dropped its fourth straight GSC contest.
 
The Green-and-White took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with RBI singles by Taylor Hughes and Mariah Alvarez.
 
CBU answered back with a three spot in the top of the second, taking advantage of two DSU errors on a bases loaded ground ball back to the pitcher.
 
Kaitlin Moore continued her impressive hitting in the bottom of the third, as she tied the game at 3-3 with her 12th double of the season, scoring Kassidy Tally.
 
Following a scoreless bottom of the third, Taylor Holland's RBI single to left off relief pitcher Kim Adams, gave DSU a 4-3 lead.
 
CBU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs, taking advantage of a a two out error and an RBI single.
 
A big answer for the Lady Statesmen came in the bottom of the inning, as four runs were scored on five hits, including a two-RBI double by Holland and a two-RBI single by Moore.
 
The Lady Bucs put a scare into DSU and relief pitcher Brittany Gonzales in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs, all with two outs, which were assisted by two DSU errors. Leadoff hitter Allyson Grooms lined out to the shortstop with the tying run on third to end the game.
 
Gonzales (5-5) earned the win in relief of Miller Maddox, who pitched the first 4.2 innings. Gonzales allowed two runs, one earned on two hits, while Maddox allowed five unearned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
 
Adams (1-3) took the loss in relief of Amanda Wade, as she allowed five runs on nine hits. Wade allowed three runs on six hits in two innings.
 
Holland (3-for-3) Moore (3-for-4) each had three RBIs for DSU, and Mariah Alvarez picked up a season high three hits as well.
 
Bianca Cowan paced CBU with three hits in four trips.
 
The Lady Statesmen made things less interesting in game two, getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as Emily Todd hit the first of her two home runs of the game.
 
DSU took command with a big six run third inning, sending nine hitters to the plate. Todd hit a three run home run in the inning, and Holland had an RBI single in the inning.
 
The Lady Statesmen ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two run home run by Hughes.
 
Starting pitcher Maddox (1-2) picked up her first win at DSU as she allowed only two hits in four innings. Lauren Kendall allowed one hit in one inning of relief.
 
Kasey Beekman (1-3) allowed seven runs on six hits in the loss. Michelle McEachron allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of relief.
 
Todd finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Alvarez was 2-for-2 at the plate to lead DSU.
 
Delta State returns to action on Wednesday, March 13 for a non-conference doubleheader at the University of Arkansas-Monticello.
 
First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
