Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Delta State University women's basketball team earned its eighth consecutive 20 win season and advanced past the University of North Alabama 51-41 in the NCAA DII South Region Tournament.
Seneca Walton led the way with her eighth double-double of season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Walton jump started the offense early in the contest to lead the Lady Statesmen (20-9) on an 8-2 run against the Lions (20-11) in the opening minutes.
Delta State used solid defense in the first half to force 14 North Alabama turnovers and convert the untimely Lion mishaps into nine points to take a 23-15 lead into the locker room.
Walton led the way with eight points and four rebounds while GSC Freshman of the Year
Chelsey Rhodes contributed seven first half points and two steals.
UNA's used 19 rebounds and 6-of-18 (.333) shooting from the floor to keep the contest close with Mekena Randle's six points and five rebounds to pace the Lions in the first half.
Corinne White rallied UNA with 7-of-8 shooting from the floor in the second half to close the gap to 34-29. DSU managed to retain the lead despite 16-of-58 (.276) shooting from the floor in the game.
The Lady Statesmen responded with solid defense for the remainder of the game to close out the contest and advance to next round of the NCAA DII South Regional Tournament.
The Green-and-White connected on 19-of-25 (.760) free throws on the afternoon while Rhodes,
Brittany Roberts, and
Rhandi Ball contributed eight points each in the victory.
White led the way for the Lions with 14 points and four rebounds followed up by Sarah Bailey who contributed 10 point and four rebounds.
