Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen and the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers split a pair of extra inning games, Saturday at University Field.
Delta State (11-13, 5-5) took advantage of five UAH (12-10, 5-3) errors to take game one 3-2 in nine innings.
The Lady Chargers sent 15 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth to take game two 14-3 in eight innings.
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, after
Kaitlin Moore's RBI single up the middle scored
Kassidy Tally, who advanced to third on a throwing error by pitcher Whitney Toler to lead off the game.
UAH answered back in the top of the second with an RBI single by Nicole Bobrowski, scoring Mary Kelley from second.
The Lady Chargers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Brianna Sullivan, who reached on an error, scored on an RBI double by Kathryn Whitlock.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the seventh, UAH loaded the bases off relief pitcher
Brittany Gonzales, but Mary Kelley grounded out to second to end the threat.
Mariah Alvarez reached on an error to shortstop to start the bottom of the seventh, and was advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Brook Cline. Following a walk by
Taylor Holland, pinch runner
Kayla Wilson advanced to second on a fielder's choice by
Raina Stiffler. With two outs, Tally singled on a bunt to the catcher, but Courtney McNett's throw to first was dropped, allowing Wilson to score the tying run from second.
After neither team posted a serious threat in its next trips to the plate, DSU won the game in the bottom of the ninth, as Alvarez, who reached on a second error by the shortstop, scored the winning run from third. The run was scored when Stiffler hit a ground ball to relief pitcher Kimberly Jack, who's throw to first was in the dirt.
Gonzales (6-5) allowed four hits and one unearned run in 5.1 innings of relief. Starter
Miller Maddox allowed one run on two hits with five walks in 3.2 innings.
Jack (4-4) took the loss in relief, as she allowed two unearned runs on one hit in 4.1 innings, while Toler allowed one unearned run on three hits in 4.1 innings.
Holland (2-2) was the only DSU player with multiple hits. Whitlock was 2-for-5 at the plate to lead UAH.
Game two started nearly the same, as the Lady Statesmen scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by
Emily Todd.
UAH tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with an RBI single to center field by Hannah Woodruff.
Following a solo home run by Abby MacKay in the top of the third, DSU tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, with a sacrifice fly by
Emily Todd.
The Lady Statesmen took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sac bunt by Holland, scoring Alvarez.
UAH tied the game in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by McNett, the second solo shot of the game for the Lady Chargers.
After neither team was able to score in the seventh, UAH put together its big inning in the top of the eighth, scoring 11 unearned runs on eight hits, including a three RBI double by Whitlock.
Lauren Kendall (3-6) took the loss in relief, as she allowed eight runs, one earned on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Gonzales, who started the game, allowed two earned runs on five hits in 3.0 innings. Maddox allowed four unearned runs on four hits in 0.1 innings.
Toler (6-1) earned the win in relief for UAH, as she allowed two hits in three innings. Starter Whitney Gilbert allowed three runs on five hits in four innings.
McNett and Kelley each had three hits for UAH. Tally finished 3-for-4 to lead the Lady Statesmen.
DSU returns to action Sunday, March 17 to take on the University of West Alabama in a GSC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at University Field
