Gonzales helps Lady Statesmen edge Southern Arkansas

Brittany Gonzales allowed one run on six hits
Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – Starting pitcher Brittany Gonzales allowed only one run in a complete game effort, as the Delta State University Lady Statesmen edged the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders 2-1, Tuesday at University Field.
 
With the win, the Lady Statesmen (16-25) are now 6-9 in one run games.
 
Southern Arkansas (23-25) threatened in the top of the first, putting runners on second and third with no outs. On a groundout to third by Sarah Higginbotham, Mackenzie Spanko was tagged out at the plate after attempting to score, giving Gonzales a double play. 
 
In the bottom of the second, Brook Cline's blooper down the left field line scored Taylor Holland, giving the Green-and-White a 1-0 lead
 
The Lady Statesmen scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third inning, when Kassidy Tally scored from third on an attempted double steal, after Kaitlin Moore was thrown out at second base.
 
SAU scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth on a leadoff home run by Darian Harris.
 
Gonzales (9-12) allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts, as she finished the game by retiring seven of the final nine SAU hitters.
 
Gill (17-11) allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
 
Delta State will close out the 2013 home schedule with SAU on Wednesday, April 17 with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
