SAU pitchers lead the way in doubleheader sweep of Lady Statesmen

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders allowed only one run on nine total hits in a doubleheader sweep over the Delta State University Lady Statesmen, Wednesday at University Field.
 
SAU (25-25) scored three unanswered runs to take the opener 3-1, and allowed only three hits in a 1-0 victory in game two.
 
The Lady Statesmen (16-27) are now 6-10 in contests decided by one run.
 
DSU plated its lone run of the day in the bottom of the second in the first game on an RBI single down the left field line by Memrie Corley.
 
Starting pitcher Miller Maddox held SAU hitless until the top of the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, Lauren Witzke tied the game at 1-1 on a single to center field.
 
SAU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, each time using RBI singles.
 
Hanna Gill (18-11) allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Gill allowed only two hits in the final five innings.
 
Maddox (3-6) allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts.
 
Taylor Guin of SAU was the only player in the game to have multiple hits.
 
Amber Adcock and Taylor Holland each had doubles for DSU.
 
Starting pitchers Taylor Clifton and Lauren Kendall stole the show in game two.
 
Kendall allowed only one SAU hit after the second inning, and Clifton seven straight hitters, before hitting Taylor Hughes with a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
SAU scored the lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth on a successful first and third double steal attempt that led to Courtney Johnson scoring after Guin was thrown out at second.
 
Clifton (6-12) allowed four hits in six innings. Gill recorded all three outs in the seventh inning to pick up her second save of the season.
 
Kendall (4-9) took the tough loss, allowing one run on three hits.
 
DSU will play its final eight games of the regular season, beginning on Saturday, April 20 in Huntsville, Ala., to take on the UAH Lady Chargers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. All of the action will be carried live on the Lady Statesmen Sports Network.
