Lady Statesmen fail to generate offense in a pair of loses at West Alabama

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team could only manage one run in two Gulf South Conference losses to the University of West Alabama, Sunday at the UWA Softball Complex
 
UWA (27-16, 14-14) scored three first inning runs and did not look back for a 5-1 win in game one. The Tigers then pushed across a pair in the bottom of the first inning and dealt the Lady Statesmen (16-31, 8-20) a 4-0-shutout loss in the second contest.
 
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Michal Robertson. Two more runs were scored in the inning on an RBI groundout and an error on a groundball in the infield.
 
Following the three run inning, DSU starting pitcher Miller Maddox retired the next seven Tiger hitters to keep the Lady Statesmen in the game.
 
DSU scored its only run of the day in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Emily Todd.
 
UWA scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout and a solo home run by Robertson to finish the scoring.
 
Sarah Ray (16-6) allowed one run on four hits.
 
Maddox (3-8) allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits in five innings. Lauren Kendall allowed one hit in one inning of relief.
 
Robertson was the only player to have multiple hits.
 
UWA scored the only two runs it needed in the bottom of the first in the second game on a two run home run by Stephanie Shoup.
 
DSU had its biggest threat of the contest in the top of the second, loading the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a ground ball on the infield ended the threat.
 
The Tigers completed the scored the final runs o the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single by Ashley Osier.
 
Brittany Gonzales (9-13) allowed four runs on five hits in four innings. Lauren Kendall did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
 
Osier (4-0) allowed three hits in four innings, as she picked up the win. Jessica Brock allowed only one hit in three innings of relief.
 
DSU returns to action on Saturday, April 27 to face defending NCAA Division II National Champion Valdosta State University in a GSC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
