Lady Statesmen end losing streak with split at West Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team recorded 21 hits over 14 innings  to split a doubleheader with the University of West Florida, ending an eight game losing streak, Sunday at UWF Softball Complex.

DSU (17-34, 9-23) held on for a 4-3 win in the opener, before allowing a pair of runs to the Argonauts (17-23, 10-16) in the bottom of the sixth in a 5-3 loss in game two.

The Lady Statesmen chased UWF starter Lauren Register after recording only one out in the top of the first, after allowing five of the first six batters to reach safely. DSU scored two runs in the inning on an RBI double by Kaitlin Moore and an RBI single by Mariah Alvarez.

UWF scored its first run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by Caroline Caston that scored Danielle Sanders, who scored second and third base successively.

Following a single by Moore to lead off the top of the third, Taylor Holland reached safely on a fielding error, and Alvarez reached on a bunt which set up a run-scoring single by Taylor Hughes and an RBI groundout by Memrie Corley.

With a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth Sanders, who had a one out triple, scored from third on a wild pitch by Miller Maddox.

Relief pitcher Brittany Gonzales survived a scare in the bottom of the seventh, as she allowed an RBI single by Kasie Buckley, following a one out triple by Caroline Caston. With the tying run on second base, Gonzales forced a fly out and a groundout to end the game.
Moore finished 3-of-4 to lead DSU, while Alvarez, Corley and Kassidy Tally added two hits apiece.

Sanders led the Argonauts with two hits.

Maddox (4-9) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts, as she picked up the win. Gonzales (1) allowed one run on two hits in two innings for her first save of the season.

DSU started game two with another two run effort in the opening frame, using three hits, including back-to-back RBI singles by Holland and Alvarez.

West Florida got on the board in the bottom of the second on a double-steal attempt, as Bianca Lopez scored from third, after Kenny Craig was thrown out at second.

The Argos took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a throwing error on a double-steal attempt and an RBI single by Hannah Dowling.

DSU tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth after Tally singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, scoring Corley.

The two teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Maddox, who pitching in relief, threw a wild pitch to give UWF runners on second and third with one out. Following the wild pitch, Caston gave UWF the 4-3 lead on an infield single. The final run of the game was scored on another double-steal attempt, which gave UWF  a 5-3 lead.

The Lady Statesmen threatened in the top of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with a double by Amber Adcock and a single by Kaitlin Moore. Following a pop out on the infield by Holland, Sanders took away a base hit by Alvarez, as she made a diving catch in left field to finish the game.

DSU got two hits each from Tally, Moore and Corley, while Sanders, Caston and Elizabeth Nugent had a pair of hits to pace UWF.

Gonzales (9-16) allowed five runs, two earned, on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Maddox allowed one hit in 0.2 innings of relief. Taylor Bailey (12-8) allowed three runs, two earned, on 10 DSU hits.

The doubleheader with UWF closed out the 2013 regular season. DSU will begin its postseason on Friday, May 3 at the 2013 Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament at Greenbrook Softball Complex in Southaven, Miss. The Lady Statesmen will open the tournament with No.3 seed and No. 10 ranked North Alabama Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The Lady Statesmen are 0-4 versus the Lions this season, with four games being decided by one run.
