Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Lady Statesmen softball team totaled 16 hits, but failed to score a run past the third inning in a pair of one run setbacks to the No. 15 University of North Alabama Lions on Senior Day, Saturday at University Field.
UNA (32-10, 15-7) scored two runs in the fifth to take game one 4-3 and plated two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh in a 3-2 victory in game two.
The Lady Statesmen (13-21, 7-13) took a 2-0 lead in game one, using RBI singles by
Emily Todd and
Mariah Alvarez.
After pushing across one run in the top of the second, the Lions tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third with an RBI single by Summer Wilkerson.
DSU retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Alvarez reached on a fielding error by starting pitcher Breanna Riley, scoring
Kassidy Tally.
The Lions scored what proved to be the tying and winning runs in the top of the fifth on a ground ball to the shortstop, as Callie Steadman beat out
Amber Adcock's throw to the plate and a two out RBI double by Nicki Whitten.
Riley (14-4) retired 8-of-10 to close out the game, and picked up the win, as she allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits.
Miller Maddox (2-4) allowed four runs, three earned on 10 hits in five innings.
Brittany Gonzales did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.
Tally, Todd and
Memrie Corley each had two hits for the Lady Statesmen. The Lions were led by Wilkerson, who finished 2-of-4 with two RBIs.
Game two started nearly the same, as DSU scored its only runs of the contest in the bottom of the second, using aggressive base running on an infield single by Corley.
Gonzales kept UNA off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth, when the Lions scored a pair on a sacrifice fly by Callie Steadman, and an RBI single by Mallory Patterson.
Patterson drove in what proved to be the game winner in the top of the seventh on a single to right field, scoring Harlie Barkley
UNA starter Kayla Sneed (9-0) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts in the win.
Gonzales (7-10) allowed three runs on eight hits.
Taylor Hughes was the only DSU player with two hits.
Ashley Bonner and Patterson each had two hits for UNA.
DSU returns to the field on Sunday, April 7 to host Union University in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader, which will be the final home conference date of the season. First pitch at University Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
