Statesmen Soccer Opens GSC Play with 1-1 Draw Versus West Alabama

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University men's soccer team broke its losing streak, with a tie against top conference opponent University of West Alabama, on Friday afternoon, in its first home match of the season. The Statesmen move to 0-2-1 on the season and 0-0-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Alabama moves to 2-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.

The West Alabama Tigers struck early with their first goal coming in the first minute of play on a goal from Victor Gazza 59 seconds into the match, to take the lead 1-0. Delta State faced some adversity early on but held the Tigers to just one goal in the first half, keeping the score 1-0 at halftime.

As the clock was winding down to the end of regulation, Delta State scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute, on a free kick by Leonardo Rodrigues, to tie the score at 1-1.

Defense was solid on both sides to force two overtimes. West Alabama outshot Delta State 5-3 in overtime play but neither team could find the back of the net. At the end of two overtimes, the score stood at 1-1 to give the Tigers and Statesmen a tie on their records.

Delta State was led by Amine Rahmani with six shots, followed by Leonardo Rodrigues with five. The Statesmen outshot the Tigers by a wide margin of 17 to 12. Delta State's Mack Pytyck was in goal for the Statesmen. He recorded seven saves, allowed one goal, while playing all 120 minutes. He moves to 0-2-1 on the season.

Delta State takes on the University of West Florida Argonauts at Delta Field on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
