SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - On the first day of their foreign tour, the Statesmen basketball team of Delta State University took on the Santo Domingo Select Team and played to a 79-79 tie.
Delta State arrived in the Dominican Republic on Thursday and played game one against the select team that night. The travel played a factor in the first half as DSU fell to a double-digit deficit. The Statesmen got things figured out quickly, outscoring their opponent 51-43 in the second half. Down by three with the final seconds ticking off the clock, senior
Alister Chisholm knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to tie the game.
With the slippery floor due to humidity in the gym, the contest was called at regulation.
As a team, the Green-and-White shot 47 percent from the field, 41 percent from three-point range, and converted 18-of-25 from the charity stripe.
Devin Schmidt led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Jack Madgen and Chisholm each scored 14 points with Madgen dishing out six assists, while
Zelvin Smith Jr was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. The newcomers also played key roles as
Jamal Hester and
PJ Davis scored eight points apiece with Davis grabbing three rebounds.
Delta State is back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 against Mauricio Baez, a 25-and-under club team.
