Tigers Take One from Statesmen

Box Score
CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The Delta State University men's soccer team hit the pitch at Delta Field for a matchup with Ouachita Baptist on Thursday afternoon. DSU fell to the Tigers 2-0 to drop to 3-6-0 on the year, while OBU improved to 4-5-1.

The first half proved to be a hard-fought defensive match as neither team could get on the scoreboard. Both teams combined for seven shots with Delta State holding the bulk with six to Ouachita's one.

Second half play showed more offense but was one-sided. The Tigers tallied the first goal at the 54:59 mark. OBU's Dillon Farrell fired a shot from the top of the penalty box following a DSU yellow card. The wall of Statesmen defenders was not enough to keep the ball from finding the back of the net.

With the score notched at 1-0 in favor of the Tigers, Tinashe Chigede took a ball from a throw in and converted on a header to give his team the 2-0 lead in the 71st minute of play. The score stood until the final buzzer.

Delta State held the slight advantage in shots 15-12, but Ouachita took the 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Jonathan Hilton suffered the loss in goal, giving up two goals but snagging one save.

DSU is back at Delta Field on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Statesmen take on Talladega College. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
