Softball Splits Double Header with West Alabama

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen softball team of Delta State University split the double header in their conference opener at University Field on Saturday afternoon. DSU claimed the victory in game one by a score of 3-1 but dropped game two, 4-0.

Game one of the afternoon featured the Lady Statesmen scoring all their runs in the second inning courtesy of a two-out rally. Kassidy Tally singled to score Brook Cline and later scored on single up the middle by Taylor Holland. Memrie Corley scored for the third run on a passed ball for Delta State to take the 3-0 lead. A West Alabama homerun spoiled the shutout in fifth inning. The Green-and-White were able to hold on to the lead to take the 3-1 win over the Tigers in game one.

DSU only managed five hits, from five different players, including Kassidy Tally, Taylor Holland, Brook Cline, Madison Zoeller and Memrie Corley. Taylor Tucker earned the win in the circle, moving to 5-1 on the season.

Game two saw a different outcome for the Green-and-White as they fell 4-0 to the Tigers. UWA took the lead in the third inning and never looked back, adding three more runs in the sixth on a homerun. The four run lead was too much for Delta State to overcome as they were shutout for the second time this season.

Madison Zoeller produced in game two for the Lady Statesmen, going 2-for-2 with a double, two of the total five hits for DSU. Taylor Holland, Kaitlin Moore, and Brook Cline added the other three hits. Macie Wilde suffered the loss to fall to 0-5 on the year.

Delta State will look to take the series with West Alabama for game three on Sunday, Feb. 16. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at University Field.
