FLORENCE, Ala. –
Kaitlin Moore's 6-for-8, 6 RBI performance hoisted Delta State softball to a split with North Alabama on Saturday afternoon. DSU lost a heartbreaker in game one, losing 6-5 in 11 innings but bounced back to win 6-4 in game two. The Lady Statesmen improve to 8-8 on the season and 2-3 in Gulf South Conference play, while North Alabama drops to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Scoring in the first game of the double header was held to extra innings. Neither team could score through regulation, forcing extra innings when both teams turned on their offense.
In the top of the eighth inning,
Memrie Corley reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by North Alabama allowed
Megan Mayfield to score. Two batters later,
Kaitlin Moore singled through the hole at second base to score Corley and
Kara Lane Nowell for a two-out, two-RBI single, giving Delta State the 3-0 lead over the Lions.
Three UNA runs in the bottom of the eighth and a scoreless ninth inning from both squads forced the tenth inning. Moore delivered again with a two-RBI single to score Corley and Cline to regain the lead, 5-3. Then, North Alabama tied the game for the second time at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
A scoreless eleventh inning by the Lady Statesmen was decisive as the Lions went on to win 6-5 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI grounder to the right side of the infield.
Miller Maddox suffered the loss in game one as she came in for relief when the game was tied. She falls to 1-1 on the year.
Delta State came out with a vengeance in game two. Delta State tacked on the first runs of the game in the third inning when
Taylor Holland reached on an error, scoring
Brook Cline. Later,
Kaitlin Moore hit her third two-RBI single of the day to score Holland and Tally, taking the lead 3-0 over the Lions.
Andrea Cutts extended the DSU lead on an RBI single to score
Megan Mayfield and to add to the lead in the top of the fourth, 4-0.
North Alabama made the game interesting in the bottom frame of the fifth when they cut the Delta State lead to two, scoring two runs, notching the score at 4-2.
The very next inning
Madison Zoeller gave the Lady Statesmen back the comfortable lead when she singled to score Mayfield from second to lead 5-2. Adding on the lead again was
Andrea Cutts who reached on an error, scoring Zoeller.
Down to their last at-bats, the Lions clawed back within two in the bottom of the seventh, but DSU held on the win 6-4.
Macie Wilde earned the win to improve to 2-5 on the year, while
Miller Maddox earned the save, her first of the year.
Kaitlin Moore guided the Lady Statesmen in offense in the double-header, going 4-for-8 at the plate and driving in 6 runs.
Delta State will look to take the series on Sunday, Feb. 23 in game three against North Alabama. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
