Softball Drops Series with North Alabama with 5-1 Loss in Game 3

FLORENCE, Ala. – Delta State softball dropped the series with North Alabama, losing game three 5-1 to the Lions. The Lady Statesmen fall to 8-9 on the season and 2-4 in Gulf South Conference play, while North Alabama improves to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.

Game three was the decisive game in the weekend series with North Alabama.

The Green-and-White fell behind early, 1-0, on back-to-back singles by North Alabama in the bottom of the first inning.

Delta State answered with a run to tie the game in the top of the third at 1-1 on an RBI-single from Taylor Holland, scoring Kassidy Tally from second. North Alabama regained the lead in the bottom frame with two runs courtesy of an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly to lead 3-1.

The Lady Statesmen threatened in the top of the sixth with bases loaded and one out but with the North Alabama infield in, two Delta State runners were thrown out at the plate.

UNA's catcher Carey Grace Peebles went yard to bring in two more runs, 5-1, in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.

Taylor Holland was responsible for the lone run the Lady Statesmen put on the scoreboard. Holland and Alvarez led Delta State going 2-for-4 at the plate. DSU outhit UNA eight to six but were not able to string hits together. Kassidy Tally earned her 18th stolen base of the year. She is 18-for-20 on the season.

Freshman Taylor Tucker suffered the loss pitching 5.2 innings and giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits. Tucker struck out two and walked four.

The Lady Statesmen return to play on Saturday, March 1 in Valdosta, Ga., with a conference double-header against the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State. The first pitch will be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
