No. 11 Lady Statesmen cruise past West Alabama 63-38

CLEVELAND, Miss.Seneca Walton scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead No. 11 Delta State University to a 63-38 victory over the University of West Alabama in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action Monday, Feb. 3 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The game was originally set to be played last Thursday, but had to be rescheduled due to last week's wintery weather that forced school closings and travel issues across the southeast.

"We certainly didn't play our best game tonight, but we played well enough to get the win at Sillers," DSU head coach David Midlick said. "Seneca had great first half and we were able to get a lot of minutes for our ladies in the second half."

Fueled by Walton's 19 points and four rebounds, the No. 11 Lady Statesmen raced out to a 37-21 halftime lead over West Alabama. DSU's largest lead was 22 points, 31-9, with 4:45 to go in the half.

UWA closed the half on 12-6 run to make the halftime margin 16 points.

Hitting on 8-of-21 from the field, UWA shot 38.1 percent in the half, while DSU connected on 13-of-26 shots for 50 percent.  The Lady Tigers turned it over 10 times in the half, leading to 15 points for the Lady Statesmen.

The second half saw a repeat of the first, as the Lady Statesmen outscored UWA 26-17, building their largest lead of the game to 28 points with 5:11 to go, 60-32.

Neither team mustered much offense over the final minutes to make the final margin 25 points, 63-38.

DSU finished the game shooting 45.7 percent, while the Lady Statesmen held UWA to just 27.1 percent, a low in GSC games.

The Lady Statesmen out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 37-32 while forcing 20 turnovers that led to 21 DSU points.  The Green-and-White also held a 21-8 lead in scoring off the bench and a narrow 16-14 edge in the paint.

Walton, a junior from Clarksdale, Miss., finished the game shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-10 at the line for 20 points.  The reigning GSC Women's Player of the Week also cleared seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

Led by Walton's 20 points, a total of 10 Lady Statesmen scored in the contest.  Anissa Jackson added eight points with Ball chipping in seven.  Myiesha Stewart and Chelsey Rhodes closed with six points apiece.

UWA's Quintinette Odom finished with a double-double after scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.  Kelcia Bufkin had six points as well.     

Delta State hits the road for a pair of road contests to wrap up the week.  The Lady Statesmen begin their road swing through Georgia on Thursday, Feb. 6 at the University of West Georgia.  Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. CST at The Coliseum in Carrollton, Ga.

Led by Rhandi Ball's 14 points and eight rebounds, the Lady Statesmen defeated West Georgia 57-46 on Jan. 4 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 

DSU will close out the week at Shorter University on Saturday, Feb. 8., in Rome, Ga.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. CST at the Winthrop-King Center.
