Lady Statesmen Softball Suffers Sweep at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lady Statesmen softball team of Delta State made the long road trip to Valdosta, Ga., and were met by a tough Lady Blazer's team. DSU suffered the sweep in the double-header, falling 10-5 and 13-1 to VSU to drop to 8-11 on the season and 2-6 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Lady Blazers improved to 16-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Game one featured the Green-and-White taking the lead in the first inning when Amber Adcock hit a sacrifice fly to score Kassidy Tally. Later in the inning, Valdosta walked in a run for Delta State to take the 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Blazers put four runs on the board to take the 4-2 lead over DSU.

Valdosta went away with the lead in the third and fourth innings by adding five runs over two innings to take the commanding 9-2 advantage. Delta State answered and came back with three runs on two hits, a two-RBI single from Mariah Alvarez and an RBI double from Amber Adcock, in the top of the sixth inning to inch back to a 9-5 deficit.

VSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to produce the final score, 10-5 in favor of the Lady Blazers.

The Green-and-White narrowly outhit Valdosta 10-9, but Delta State was not able to come away with the win. Kassidy Tally and Mariah Alvarez led the offense with Tally going 3-for-5 at the plate and Alvarez going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs. Amber Adcock contributed two RBI as Andrea Cutts added one. Tally included two stolen bases in game one.

Senior Miller Maddox (1-2) suffered the loss, pitching 6.0 innings and giving up ten runs, seven unearned, on nine hits.

Game two had a similar outcome. Back-to-back Valdosta homeruns put four Lady Blazer runs on the board first to go up 4-0 early in the bottom of the first inning. Another homerun the very next inning added two more runs to the VSU score, 6-0, after two complete innings.

The Lady Statesmen scored their only run in the third inning when Madison Zoeller singled up the middle to score Amber Adcock from third.

Valdosta State tallied two runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take the 13-1 lead and victory over Delta State for the sweep in day one of the series.

The Lady Blazers took the advantage in hits in game two, twelve hits to DSU's six, each coming from six different Lady Statesmen, including Mariah Alvarez, Amber Adcock, Madison Zoeller, Taylor Holland, Ashley Mrozinski, and Memrie Corley. Kassidy Tally added another stolen base in game two to bring her to 21 on the season.

Freshman Macie Wilde (2-6) took the loss after pitching 4.0 innings, giving up 13 earned runs on 12 hits.

The Green-and-White look to bounce back and avoid the sweep as they take on the Lady Blazers in game three on Sunday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m.
