Softball Falls in Game Three to Drop Series with Alabama-Huntsville

Box Score
CLEVELAND, Miss. – Game three between the No. 2 Lady Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville and the Lady Statesmen of Delta State University on Sunday afternoon decided which squad would take the series. Delta State suffered the 6-5 loss in nine innings, dropping the series. DSU falls to 14-18 overall and 7-10 in Gulf South Conference play.

One run decided both games in the double-header prior to game three, and the finale was no different.

Leadoff walks proved to be crucial in the first inning of play. A leadoff walk led to an RBI-single for UAH to take the early 1-0 lead.

In return, Kassidy Tally drew a walk to leadoff the bottom frame. Mariah Alvarez singled up the middle to score Tally from second. The next at-bat had Kaitlin Moore laying down a sacrifice bunt to move Alvarez to scoring position. DSU took the lead when Amber Adcock missed a homerun by inches, hitting the top of the fence, bringing in Alvarez, and taking the 2-0 lead over the Blue-and-White.

A double off the left field wall by Alabama-Huntsville scored a runner from first to tie the game at 2-2 in the third.

A two-out rally sparked Alabama-Huntsville to take the lead in the top of the fourth, 4-2, on four hits and one DSU error.

Junior Brandon, Miss., native Amber Adcock answered with her second homerun of the season to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth inning. In her next at-bat, Adcock tied the game with a single, scoring Tally from second in the fifth, notching the score at 4-4.

Megan Mayfield pinch ran for Brook Cline after Cline reached second on a UAH error early in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kara Lane Nowell moved Mayfield 60 feet closer to third base, and then Kassidy Tally beat out an infield single, scoring Mayfield and taking the 5-4 lead with one inning to go.

Huntsville did not go down without a fight, clawing back to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh.

A 1-2-3 inning by Delta State in the bottom of the seventh led to free softball at University Field.

After a scoreless eighth inning from both sides, Huntsville plated a run to take the lead, 6-5, over Delta State. A throw-down play did not work in Delta State's favor as the Lady Chargers brought in the go-ahead run.

The one-run lead was enough for the Blue-and-White to claim the win and the series.

Amber Adcock led all batters going 4-for-5 at the plate with two singles, a double, and a homerun, a triple shy of the cycle. Adcock scored once and brought in three of the five runs scored by Delta State. Kassidy Tally and Mariah Alvarez drove in the other two runs.

Tally picked up two stolen bases in game three, bringing her season total to 36 in 38 attempts.

Freshman Taylor Tucker (7-6) suffered the loss, going 8.0 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, and striking out two.

The Lady Statesmen hit the field next weekend for a three-game conference series with West Georgia. Double-header action will be on Saturday, March 29 starting at 1:00 p.m. with the single game being played on Sunday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m.
