CARROLLTON, Ga. – Delta State softball sought to take the series sweep over West Georgia on Monday afternoon, but the Wolves spoiled the sweep as they took game three 7-3. The Lady Statesmen fall to 16-19 on the year and 9-11 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Green-and-White fell behind early in the first inning, the first time DSU trailed UWG in the series, as the Wolves plated a run to take the 1-0 lead.
West Georgia added two more runs in the second inning before Delta State answered with a run in the top of the third inning.
Brook Cline contributed a leadoff double and later advanced to third on a
Memrie Corley single. Cline was later thrown out at home on a fielder's choice to the infield and was unable to beat the throw home. With two runners in scoring position,
Kaitlin Moore sent a single through the hole at shortstop, scoring Corley while
Kassidy Tally was thrown out at home. Although two DSU runners were thrown out at the plate, the Lady Statesmen were able to get one run across to trail UWG 3-1 after two and a half innings of play.
The Wolves responded with one run in the fourth and fifth but not before the Green-and-White tacked on another run in the fifth.
Andrea Cutts led off with a double down the left field line to start the fifth and advanced to third on a single by Corley. A diversion play had Corley stealing second but hesitating to get the West Georgia defense involved in a run-down that was executed perfectly by the DSU runners as Cutts came into score with Delta State trailing 5-2 after five complete innings.
The Blue-and-White continued their offensive attack into the sixth inning as they added on two more runs to take the 7-2 lead with Delta State's last at-bat coming in the top of the seventh.
Delta State was able to bring one run around to score when
Mariah Alvarez came through with the bases loaded on an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Cutts and cutting the deficit to 7-3.
With the tying run at the plate in
Amber Adcock and the bases loaded with two outs, Adcock sent a chopper up the middle. West Georgia's second baseman made the play and stepped on second to get Alvarez out on the play, ending the game by a final of 7-3.
Memrie Corley continued her hot streak into game three as she went a perfect 3-for-3 in the series conclusion, providing three singles. Corley went 8-for-10 on the weekend with eight singles.
Mariah Alvarez and
Kaitlin Moore provided one RBI each.
Kassidy Tally picked up one stolen base in game three, putting her at 39 for the year. Delta State was outhit by West Georgia 16-8.
Taylor Tucker (9-7) suffered the loss as she pithed 1.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits.
Miller Maddox came in for relief work and contributed 4.0 innings, giving up four earned runs on eleven hits and striking out three.
Kaitlin Moore also saw time in the circle for the Lady Statesmen as she pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit.
Delta State hits the field for Gulf South Conference action next weekend at University Field in Cleveland, Miss. The Lady Statesmen will host the Lady Flames of Lee University in double-header action on Saturday, April 5 starting at 2:00 p.m. with the single game series finale being played on Sunday, March 6 at 1:00 p.m.
