DSU Softball Takes Series Sweep Against Christian Brothers

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State earned the sweep in the double-header on Saturday against Christian Brothers and earned the sweep for the series on Sunday afternoon. DSU took the finale by score of 10-2 to improve to 11-12 overall and 5-7 in Gulf South Conference play.

The Lady Statesmen put runs on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Brook Cline ended her slump with a two-run homerun to go up 2-0 over the Lady Bucs.

Christian Brothers quickly responded in the next inning, tying the game 2-2 on a sacrifice fly and a squeeze play.

Delta State was quiet in the third but regained the lead in the fourth and never looked back, adding four run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Memrie Corley doubled to right center to score Cline and Holland. Later in the inning, Corley scored on a passed ball and Kassidy Tally scored on a Mariah Alvarez single to take the 6-2 lead after four complete innings.

The Green-and-White offense sealed the deal in the fifth inning when Tally singled up the middle to score Taylor Holland. Pinch runner, Ellen Tarrant scored on a passed ball and finally Alvarez forced the mercy rule win when she singled to center to score Tally and Corley.

The Lady Statesmen claimed the victory 10-2 in five innings, for their fourth run-rule win of the year. DSU outhit CBU 14-3. Taylor Holland and Brook Cline led the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Mariah Alvarez and Kassidy Tally followed close behind with 3-for-4 days. Alvarez now leads the team with a .389 batting average.

Kassidy Tally picked up two stolen bases on the day, bringing her to 23 on the year. Macie Wilde (3-6) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up two unearned runs on three hits.

DSU will hit the field again against Harding University in Searcy, Ark., for a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11.
