Box Score 2 MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Delta State University softball team earned the sweep against former GSC opponent Southern Arkansas, taking game one 4-2 and game two 8-3. DSU improves to 20-20 on the season.
Delta State got the scoring started first early in game one when
Kassidy Tally put herself in scoring position with two stolen bases and scored on a throwing error by the SAU catcher. In the next at bat,
Kaitlin Moore singled up the middle to bring
Mariah Alvarez to score, leading 2-0.
Another run in the second resulted on an Alvarez double down the left field line to extend the DSU lead to 3-0.
Southern Arkansas answered with a run when SAU's Audrey Farfan doubled to left field scoring the first Lady Mulerider run, cutting the lead to 3-1.
Both teams scored a single run in the fifth. DSU's came on an RBI single from
Brook Cline to score Moore. SAU's came on a solo homerun from the pitcher, Shelby Miller.
Delta State held on to win game one 4-2.
Taylor Tucker (10-8) earned the win pitching the complete game, giving up two earned runs on nine hits.
Game two started out differently when Southern Arkansas took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Lady Statesmen answered with a lone run the next frame when three consecutive hits and an SAU error with two outs brought Cline around to score for DSU to trail 2-1.
Delta State took the lead in the fourth with three runs on four hits.
Memrie Corley got things started with a stand-up triple and later came around to score on a Tally single. A double by Alvarez and a single by Moore brought two runs around to score for DSU to take the 4-2.
The Lady Muleriders cut the lead to 4-3 on another solo homerun by SAU's Quintana.
DSU rallied in the fifth to score four runs and extend its lead to 8-3 in the fifth. Tally singled on a bunt to bring in
Taylor Holland from third. Tally stole second and later scored on a single from
Mariah Alvarez also scoring Cline. Moore scored the final run of the game when she singled to right center field bringing Alvarez to the plate.
Macie Wilde (6-7) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings and giving up three runs, two earned.
Miller Maddox came in for relief and pitched 2.0 innings giving up just one hit and no runs.
Mariah Alvarez and
Kaitlin Moore led the way for offense. Alvarez went 5-for-8, driving in 4 runs, while Moore went 6-for-8, bringing in three runs. Eight of the starting nine hitters had a multi-hit day with Moore and Alvarez having multi-hit games in both games of the doubleheader. The team combined for 28 hits on the day.
The Green-and-White return to action against Southern Arkansas with a doubleheader at University Field on Sunday, April 13. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 p.m.
