Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – As the 2014 regular season is coming to a close, Delta State softball faced off against Harding University in mid-week nonconference action on Tuesday afternoon. DSU earned the split, falling in game one 7-3 and claiming game two 7-2. The Lady Statesmen move to 25-26 on the season.
The Bison went ahead early in the first inning when Harding brought two runs across the board, taking the early 2-0 lead.
The Green-and-White fought back in the fourth, scoring one run in the bottom half of the fourth.
Amber Adcock led off with a double to deep left field, putting her in scoring position. Adcock advanced to third on a Harding error and later scored on a fielder's choice by
Andrea Cutts. DSU left the bases loaded but did some damage, cutting the lead in half to notch the score at 2-1.
Delta State tied it up, 2-2, in the fifth courtesy of a
Madison Zoeller RBI single, bringing in
Kaitlin Moore who got on with a one-out double.
Harding rallied to tack on five more runs in the sixth to take the 7-2 lead.
The Lady Statesmen scored one more run when
Mariah Alvarez doubled to get on base, advanced to third, and scored on a wild pitch, but that was not enough, as Delta State fell in game one 7-3.
Miller Maddox (5-7) suffered the lost, pitching 5.1 innings and giving up five runs, four earned, before
Taylor Tucker came in for 1.2 innings of relief.
Game two began with two scoreless innings from both teams until
Kassidy Tally reached on a Bison error and came around to score on an RBI-single by
Mariah Alvarez.
Amber Adcock and Alvarez crossed the plate when
Taylor Holland singled over the head of the second baseman, extending the DSU lead 3-0.
DSU took advantage of Harding errors and added one more run in the fifth when
Megan Mayfield reached on an error, bringing in
Brook Cline and giving the Lady Statesmen the 4-0 lead.
Three Green-and-White runs crossed the plate in the sixth on RBIs from Alvarez, Adcock, and Zoeller, adding to the DSU lead to 7-0.
The Bison finally scored in their last at-bat, scoring two runs and notching the score at 7-2, stringing together three hits in the last inning, spoiling the no-hitter for
Macie Wilde.
The score stood for the final at 7-0, as Delta State picked up the split.
Kassidy Tally led the offense, going 4-for-8 at the plate and scoring twice. Tally picked up three stolen bases to bring her total to 58 on the year, one away from tying and two away from claiming the school and GSC record for stolen bases in a single season.
Mariah Alvarez and
Amber Adcock both went 3-for-8 on the day, each scoring three times and Alvarez driving in three runs.
Macie Wilde (8-7) earned the win in game two. Up until the top of the fifth inning with one out, Harding failed to get a runner on base when a walk was issued. No hits were allowed by Wilde for 6.2 innings, one out away for the complete game no-hitter, until three hits were strung together by the 3, 4, and 5 hitters for the Bison. Wilde ended the outing with the complete game, giving up two earned runs on three hits, walking one and striking out two.
Delta State wraps up the regular season on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at University Field as the Lady Statesmen take on the Lady Argos of West Florida in Gulf South Conference action. A singe game is scheduled for Friday at 5:00 p.m. with the doubleheader being played on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. Saturday represents Senior Day for two Lady Statesmen,
Megan Mayfield and
Miller Maddox. Senior Day will begin at 11:35 a.m.
