Softball Gains Momentum With Win Over West Florida

Box Score
CLEVELAND, Miss. – The bats were hot for DSU softball in the single conference game on Friday night as Delta State belted out 13 runs on 16 hits to take the 13-8 victory over the Lady Argos of West Florida and take the momentum in the series.

The Lady Statesmen went ahead early in the first by scoring one run when Madison Zoeller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, taking the lead 1-0.

West Florida answered big in the next frame with three runs on three hits and one DSU error, earning the 3-1 advantage.

The very next at-bat for the Green-and-White tied the game at three all. Back-to-back hits were strung together by Megan Mayfield and Kassidy Tally before Kaitlin Moore singled to left field to bring in Mayfield. Later, Amber Adcock singled through the hole at shortstop to bring around Tally.

The Lady Argos matched the two runs scored by DSU in the third to retake the lead, 5-3, but not for long as the Lady Statesmen rallied back with two outs, scoring three runs in the bottom half. Mayfield got the rally started with her second hit of the day and later advanced on a single from Tally. Mariah Alvarez delivered with runners at first and second on a double, driving in Mayfield, putting herself at second, and Tally at third for Moore. A two-RBI double from Moore brought in Alvarez and Tally for DSU to regain the lead, 6-5.

West Florida came back to tie the game in the fourth on a solo homerun from Jenna Wilkinson to notch the score at six apiece.

The lead changed hands again as Delta State took the lead in the fifth and never looked back. Tally singled up the middle, driving in Memrie Corley. Alvarez reached base with the bases loaded courtesy of a catcher's interference, and Mayfield later scored again on a wild pitch, giving Delta State the lead 9-6.

DSU tacked on one more run in the fifth when Taylor Holland advanced two bases on wild pitches and eventually scored.

The Blue-and-White attempted the comeback by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh, but it was not enough as the Green-and-White scored three more runs in the sixth on singles from Mayfield and Moore and a two-run homerun from Amber Adcock.

Delta State went on to win game one of the series 13-8.

Sixteen hits were racked up by seven of the starting nine for the Lady Statesmen. Megan Mayfield led the way, going 4-for-4 and scoring four times. Kaitlin Moore, Kassidy Tally, and Amber Adcock contributed three hits apiece, while Mariah Alvarez, Taylor Holland, and Brook Cline added one hit each.

Miller Maddox (6-7) got the win in relief, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits, striking out three.

The Lady Statesmen wrap up regular season play on Saturday, April 26 with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. against the Lady Argos. Senior Day will begin at 11:30 a.m.
