THE LEADOFFThe Lady Statesmen are headed to the postseason. With the second highest strength of schedule in the South Region, Delta State will be traveling to Tampa, Fla. for the NCAA DII South Region Tournament.
The last time DSU made an appearance in the region tournament was in 2002 when current head coach
Casey Bourgoyne-Charles was a senior.
Delta State earned the bid to the big dance with its performance at the Gulf South Conference tournament.
DSU made it to championship Saturday for the third year in a row but fell short to No. 2 Alabama-Huntsville in the game where the winner would compete for the championship.
Friday's matchup with Valdosta State proved to be the most exciting game of the season for the Green-and-White.
No. 2 in the conference and No. 20 in the nation, Valdosta was the favorite as the only team in the tournament without a loss. Delta State rallied back from a 4-3 deficit to take the 6-4 victory courtesy of a walk-off home run by
Amber Adcock.
Adcock led DSU on the weekend, going 7-for-16 at the plate with 10 RBI and 5 runs, including 3 home runs.
Other outstanding performances reigned down from senior
Miller Maddox and sophomore
Kassidy Tally.
Maddox pitched a total of 23 innings and gave up 13 earned runs on 20 hits. The Greenville, Miss., native struck out 11.
Tally went 9-for-16 on the weekend from the leadoff spot, contributing at least one hit in every game. The sophomore outfielder stole 9 bases to reach 70 so far this season.
Adcock, Maddox, and Tally were all named to the GSC All-Tournament Team.
Delta State will have its hands full in its first game at regionals against the host team, Tampa.
The Spartans are 31-6 on the year and are the No. 2 overall seed in the South Region Tournament as the host for site two.
