No. 7 Tampa Edges Delta State 3-2 in South Region Tournament

Box Score
TAMPA, Fla. – Delta State softball made the trip to the sunshine state for the NCAA South Region Tournament, taking on the host, University of Tampa, on Friday. The Lady Statesmen narrowly missed the victory, as the Spartans took the 3-2 win in the opening round.

This trip marked the first in 12 years that DSU softball appeared in the South Region Tournament, going back to 2002 when head coach
Taylor Holland
delivered with runners in scoring position, dropping a blooper into center field for a two-RBI single, scoring Kassidy Tally and Mariah Alvarez. That notched the score at 2-2.

Both teams were scoreless through the fifth and sixth, leaving the game up to the seventh inning. DSU failed to score in their at-bat.

Tampa's leadoff, Kayleen Boatwright, ended the game in walk off fashion on a triple, advancing home on a Delta State throwing error and scoring the winning run to take the win 3-2.

The Spartans outhit the Lady Statesmen 7-2. Kaitlin Moore and Holland were responsible for the only two hits.

An outstanding effort from Miller Maddox in the circle was not enough, as Maddox fell to 9-10 on the season. The senior pitched 6.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts and gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits.

The Green-and-White move to the loser's bracket and will face Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
