Statesmen Soccer Falls in OT, 2-1

Box Score LIVINGSTON, Alabama - The Delta State men's soccer team dropped their first conference match of the season in overtime on the road against West Alabama, 2-1.
 
West Alabama jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Ashley Phillips in the 15th minute, his first of the season.  DSU continued to press but failed to convert on their opportunities. The Green-and-White went into the half down 1-0.
 
Early in the second half Ricardo Filho netted the equalizer for the Statesmen in the 67th minute, his second goal of the season, on an assist from Tiago Doneux. Both teams continued to press hard but came up empty.
 
At the end of regulation the score remained tied at one and the teams prepared for extra time. Evan Buetler scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute of play, making the final 2-1.
 
West Alabama held the advantage in shots 19-11, but Delta State led in corner kicks 6-3. Jonathan Hilton made five saves and his opponent, Lavares Stone, also stopped five shots.
 
The Statesmen continue their conference road trip as they head into Alabama- Huntsville for a key rivalry Gulf South match-up. Kick-off is set for 3:30 pm on Sunday, Sept. 28th.
