Statesmen Soccer Comes Up Short in Season Opener, 2-0

Box Score MONTEVALLO, Alabama – The Delta State University men's soccer team was on the road to open up their 2014 campaign against the University of Montevallo Falcons. The Statesmen came up short on a hard fought battle, 2-0.

Montevallo (1-0) held the advantage early, scoring in the 27th minute. The Falcon goal was netted by Srdjan Duujkovic , with the assist from Jeffery Hessenberger. Shortly after, Amine Rahmani had a great chance to even the score for Delta State (0-1) when a pass came across the penalty area and he slotted the shot just wide of the net and Falcon goalkeeper Yannic Horn. Montevallo was able to hold the 1-0 lead at the half.
 
The Statesmen came out strong for the next 45 minutes but were unable to score when the home team struck a ball past Delta State keeper, Jacob Hauenstein, making the two-goal deficit in the 78th minute. The Falcons had a total of 12 shots with five on goal. Hauenstein made three saves for the Statesmen, while his counterpart made two saves on two shots on goal by DSU.
 
Rahmani, who had two shots and one on goal, led the Statesmen offense. The Falcons held the advantage on corner kicks five to one.
 
Delta State will have their home opener against Lynn University Sunday, Sept. 7th at 2 p.m. at Delta Field.
