  • Short Story: The Delta State University women's basketball team claimed its fourth-straight Gulf South Conference victory, as the Lady Statesmen clipped the Hawks 58-36 on Monday, Jan. 10 at Walter Silliers Coliseum. Becca Ruckes led the Lady Statesmen with 14 points and seven rebounds, as DSU moved into a tie for third in the GSC race.

How It Happened
  • The Lady Statesmen shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor for the game and held the Hawks to 24.4 percent (11-of-45). SU was also a mere 3-of-22 from 3-point range for 13.6 percent.
  • Delta State, which leads the GSC in scoring defense, held Shorter to 31 points below its season average of 67 in the win.
  • DSU out-rebounded SU 39-31 and outscored the Hawks 18-7 on points off turnovers. The Lady Statesmen also outscored the Hawks 22-10 off the bench.
  • Becca Ruckes, a 6-foot-1 junior from Ripley, Miss., scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed seven boards to lead the Lady Statesmen on the night. Ruckes was 4-of-5 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
  • Seneca Walton scored 11 points and pulled down nine boards in just 27 minutes for DSU.
  • Chelsey Rhodes added 11 points for her fourth straight double-digit performance.
  • Lady Statesmen jumped out to a quick 19-7 lead in the game's first 12 minutes and led 29-15 at the break.

  • Seneca Walton, a 6-foot-1 senior center, became the 34th Lady Statesmen in program history to top 1,000 career points. The Clarksdale, Miss., native has scored 1,065 points to rank 31st on the career list. She has also 720 career rebounds and needs just 14 to crack the career list.
  • Junior Chelsey Rhodes is just 59 points away from 1,000 for her career at DSU. The Monticello, Ark., native ranks eighth on the all-time list with 111 made 3-pointers.
  • This is the 49th season of Lady Statesmen Basketball with an all-time record of 1,073-267-3.
  • One of the nation's most successful women's programs, Delta State has made 26 NCAA postseason appearances with 55 tournament victories, 13 Elite Eight appearances, nine Final Four berths, and six NCAA/AIAW National Championships. The Lady Statesmen's 55 NCAA Tournament victories are also a Division II record.
