Walton, Rhodes Lead Lady Statesmen Past West Georgia, 64-59

  • Short Story:  Seneca Walton and Chelsey Rhodes combined to score 50 points to lead the Delta State University women's basketball to a 64-59 win over the University of West Georgia on Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Carrollton, Georgia.  Walton scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season while Rhodes followed with 22 points.

How It Happened
  • West Georgia grabbed an early 7-0 lead just 2:37 into the game on a Jadechia Hill jumper.
  • The Lady Statesmen fought back and tied the game, 13-13, on a Walton layup with 13:07 remaining in the opening half.
  • A Rhodes 3-pointer gave DSU its first lead, 16-15, at 11:47 and then her layup extended the lead to 18-15 less than a minute later.
  • Trailing 23-22, the Lady Statesmen outscored the Wolves 14-7 over the final 6:12 of the first half to take a 36-30 advantage into intermission.
  • Delta State shot 47 percent from the field, making 15-of-32 shots and were six-of-11 from 3-point range for 54 percent in the first half. West Georgia connected on 10-of-24 field goal attempts for 42 percent an 0-for-4 on 3-pointers in the half.
  • The Wolves managed to cut the Lady Statesmen lead to 39-37 with 16:08 to go in the second half before DSU pushed the lead to 49-37 on a Becca Ruckes basket with under 10 minutes left.
  • A Marion Lemonnier jumper got UWG to within 57-56 with 2:44 left only to see the Lady Statesmen outscore the Wolves 8-3 to close the game and earn the 64-59 win.
  • Delta State shot 47 percent (15-of-32) in the second half and finished the game 15-of-51 for 49 percent, including six-of-14 from beyond the arc. UWG shot 35 percent (11-of-31) in the second half, finishing 21-of-55 overall for 38 percent and 3-of-20 from 3-point range for 18 percent.
  • Taylor Beverly led UWG with 27 points and 14 rebounds.

  • Carly Keller tied a career-high with seven assists while also chipping in five points and a steal.
  • This is the 49th season of Lady Statesmen Basketball with an all-time record of 1,075-269-3.
  • The win against UWG gives Lady Statesmen first-year Head Coach Craig Roden 506 career win and 308 Gulf South Conference victories.
  • One of the nation's most successful women's programs, Delta State has made 26 NCAA postseason appearances with 55 tournament victories, 13 Elite Eight appearances, nine Final Four berths, and six NCAA/AIAW National Championships. The Lady Statesmen's 55 NCAA Tournament victories are also a Division II record.
