  • Short Story:  Seneca Walton scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Delta State University women's basketball team (11-7, 9-6 GSC) to a 74-71 win over Union University (15-3, 11-3 GSC) on Friday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.  DSU outscored the Bulldogs 11-8 in overtime to help the Lady Statesmen upend the GSC's first place team.

How It Happened
  • Union jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before going on 6:41 scoring drought that saw the Bulldogs go 0-for-6 from the field during the stretch.
  • The Lady Statesmen went on a 13-2 run to take a 13-6 on layup by Chelsey Rhodes layup at the 9:37 mark.
  • Delta State took a 28-18 lead on a 3-point field goal by Chelsey Rhodes with 1:44 remaining in the half only to see Union outscore DSU 9-2 to close the half trailing 30-27.   Amber Rechis made two 3-pointers and Amy Philamlee had one during the 9-2 run.
  • The Lady Statesmen shot 44 percent from the field (12-of-27) in the opening half while Union connected on 36 percent  (9-of-25) of its shots, including 7-of-21 from 3-point range in the first half.
  • Delta State went on a 10-1 to build a 40-28 after a ball layup with 17:02 left in the second half.
  • Union climbed came back using a 15-3 run to take a 44-43 lead on two Philamlee free throws with under 12 minutes to play.
  • Neither team claimed more than a three-point lead before DSU held a 62-56 lead on two Rhodes free throws with 50 seconds left.
  • Union's Philamlee made a layup with seven seconds left to tie the game, 63-63, and force overtime.
  • The Lady Statesmen jumped out to a 70-65 lead in overtime on two Rhodes free throws with 1:53 left.
  • Union battled back to take a 71-70 after a Philamlee basket with :58 seconds to go before DSU scored the final four points to earn the 74-71 win.
  • Seneca Walton scored 20 points and collected 12 rebounds to lead three Lady Statesmen in double figures. Rhodes added 18 points and Ball followed with 16 points and seven boards.
  • Philamlee scored a game-high 21 points along with 11 assists while Rechis added 18 points and Kelsey Risner 11 point and 11 rebounds.

Beyond the Box Score
  • The Lady Statesmen have won seven of their last eight games including three straight at home.
  • Seneca Walton's double-double was her second straight. Walton's 20 points 1,151 career points, 45 points away from passing Amber Gean (1,195/2001-2005) for 26th on the all-time scoring list.  The 20-point outing was also Walton's third straight game scoring 20-plus points.
  • Chelsey Rhodes' 18 points gives her 1,023 points moving into 34th on the all-time scoring list past Moe Bell (1,006 pts./2007-2011).
  • Rhandi Ball's 16 points moves her to within 29 points of becoming the 36th member of the DSU 1,000-point club. Ball has 971 career points.
