Seneca Walton and
Anissa Jackson scored in double figures to help the Delta State Women's Basketball (5-6, 3-4 GSC) team rally from a 20 point deficit and earn a 64-61 win over the University of North Alabama (6-4, 3-3 GSC) Saturday at Flowers Hall.
A pair of Walton free throws at the 14:50 mark and a Ball layup with 13:31 left in the first half gave the Lady Statesmen a 12-9 lead only to see UNA's Corinne White connect from 3-point range to tie the game at 12 with 12:45 to go.
The Lions took a 15-12 lead with 11:02 left after a Delisa Mabry three to begin a 28-8 run that resulted in a 40-20 lead following Jaclyn Heath 3-pointer with 2:24 remaining.
A Ball basket with 45 seconds remaining capped a 6-0 DSU run and trimmed the Lions' halftime lead to 40-26.
The Lady Statesmen shot 40 percent from the field (10-25) and made five-of-seven free throws in the opening half while the Lions shot 44 percent (15-24) that included 10-of-19 3-pointers for 52.6 percent.
North Alabama held a 46-29 lead off a Shay Trent layup with 14:47 left in the second half before the Green and White went on a 9-0 run trail by eight points with 12:02 remaining.
The Lady Statesmen chipped the lead down 54-50 after two Ball free throws at the 4:29 mark only to see UNA take a 57-50 lead on two Heath free throws.
Trent's two free throws gave UNA 59-53 advantage with 3:21 to go before the Lady Statesmen went on an 11-2 run to erase the deficit.
Ball's layup with 11 seconds remaining gave DSU just its second lead of the game, 62-61, and two
Carly Keller free throws equaled the final margin, 64-61, with two seconds left.
Delta State match its first half shooting, making 40 percent (12-30) from the field, including two 3-poiners, while going 12-of-15 from the charity stripe.
The DSU defense also stepped up forcing UNA to shoot 34 percent from the field and two-for-12 from beyond the 3-point line in the second half.
Ball lead the Lady Statesmen with 21 points along with nine rebounds, making 7-of-12 field goals and seven-of-eight free throws. Walton followed with 15 points and nine rebounds with one 3-pointer while Jackson had 12 points and five rebounds.
Jennifer Towne led UNA with 12 points followed by Heath with 10 points and five rebounds. White chipped in nine points and Randle Mekena grabbed nine rebounds.
