Lady Statesmen Hoops Drop Exhibition To Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – Despite Chelsey Rhodes' 28-point effort, Alcorn State University claimed a 66-57 win over the Delta State University women's basketball team in an exhibition contest at the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Friday.

How It Happened
  • Trailing 4-0 early, the Lady Statesmen used a 5-0 run to take a 5-4 lead on a 3-point play by senior Chelsey Rhodes with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
  • Anissa Jackson gave DSU a 7-6 lead with 5:18 left in the opening period only to see a Norianna Hayes' layup give Alcorn State the lead for good at the 4:18 mark of the first quarter.
  • Alcorn State held a 14-11 lead after the first quarter and went on an 11-0 run to start the second quarter to take a 25-11 advantage following a Ashtin Nichols jumper at the 6:11 mark of the second.
  • The Braves kept the lead between 10-12 points over the next three quarter before taking its largest lead, 66-44, with 5:34 to go in the final quarter.
  • Delta State outscored the Braves 13-5 over the final 5:33 of the contest, trimming the lead to 66-57 on a pair of free throws by Becca Ruckes with nine seconds remaining in the fourth.
  • Rhodes led the Lady Statesmen with 28 points along with four rebounds and three steals followed by Ruckes with 10 points and four boards.
  • Kaelin Kneeland led the Lady Statesmen with six rebounds.
  • Hayes led Alcorn State scoring with 28 points and eight rebounds followed by Tori Spann with 15 points and Brianna Tolliver with 12.
  • Delta State shot 32.2 percent and was 0-for-2 from 3-point range in the first half before shooting 50 percent from the field and 75 percent (3-for-4) from beyond the arc in the second half.
