Six Statesmen Score in Double-Figures to Defeat Johnson 122-59

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State University men's basketball combined for a record 20 3-pointers while, six Statesmen produced double-figures en route to a 122-59 blowout of Johnson University on Saturday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

    How It Happened
  • Johnson opened the game on an offensive rampage, going 6-of-8 from the field with four 3-pointers to take the lead 16-6 at the under-16 media timeout.
  • Delta State earned its first lead, 20-19, at the 10:19 mark on a pair of Dakota Dailey free throws.
  • The two squads traded baskets and possession of the lead until Morris' 3-pointer with 3:45 to go in the half to put DSU up 36-35. The Statesmen carried the advantage into the locker room at halftime, 48-37.
  • There were five lead changes and three ties in the first half. Johnson led by as many as 10 before the Green-and-White began closing in.
  • DSU continued to build on its lead out of the break, reeling off a 15-2 run in the opening 2:20 of the second half. The run was highlighted by buckets from downtown by Schmidt, Madgen, and John Cornish.
  • The Green-and-White strung together a 33-4 run over 7:08 and outscored the Royals 74-22 in the second half.
  • Delta State went on to defeat Johnson by a whopping 122-59.

  • The Statesmen recorded a school-best 20 3-pointers, ranking sixth all-time in the Gulf South Conference.
  • Six players produced double-figure performances, the most under Head Coach Jim Boone.
  • Freshmen Dakota Dailey and Brett Warner recorded career highs in points: Warner with 16 and Dailey with 7.
  • Delta State's 122-point output was the most by a DSU team since Feb. 17, 2000 when the Statesmen defeated Arkansas Baptist 135-101.
  • DSU scored more points in the second half than Johnson scored in the whole game, 74-59.
  • Madgen's game-high 20 points moves him within 20 points of the 1,000-point club. The Williamstown, Australia native is now third in the DSU record book in threes made (147) and threes attempted (355).
  • Schmidt's 19 points put him within six points of breaking into the top 10 all-time scoring list at Delta State. The junior guard needs 586 points to tie the all-time leader Carl Brown (1983-86).
     
Game Changer
  • Delta State's 33-4 run to end the contest put the Statesmen over the Royals to seal the deal.

  • The Statesmen travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a rematch with LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. DSU lost to the Magicians last season at home 87-85 in double overtime.
